Artists' Statement

BIRDPRAYERS
by Arya Pandjalu and Sara Nuytemans

The concept of Birdprayers discourses about the relativity of religious differences. We think that by putting into perspective time, place, culture, society, history, education and the individual we can obtain freedom of restricted and controlled believing. To opening up to the relativity of it all we can avoid religious conflicts.

The visualization of Birdprayers include 4 birdhouses in the forms of 4 different “god's” houses: a church, a mosque, a hindu-temple and a synagogue.  They stand for the 4 biggest religions which are also taking part in many of the biggest conflicts on this planet. The birdhouses will be shown together with murals, drawings and videos on the subject.

The first version of the birdhouses is made of wood and birdseeds processed with synthetic resin.

But the project Birdprayers is not ending here, following this first version we want to take the project further. It is our purpose to take it around the world, to emphasize our basic concept. The idea is to make the birdhouses with different materials, and to shoot the videos on different places in the world. The planning for the next places where we want to go is the birdmarket in Yogyakarta and after that the front of the international tribunal in Den Haag (The Netherlands) and then... every suggestion is welcome!

Our collaboration:
We both have a different religious background which helps to put in perspective the differences of what religion means which is the main idea behind this project. In our work we are, each in our own way, experimenting with the relativity of reality. Arya Pandjalu does it more on social/ psychological level while Sara Nuytemans does it more in a philosophical way. The project Birdprayers gives us the chance to go deeper into the concept by getting to know each others visions.
